- Watch your cooking
Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove.

- Smoke outside
Ask smokers to smoke outside. Have sturdy, deep ashtrays for smokers.

Keep matches and lighters up high, out of the reach of children, preferably in a cabinet with a child lock.
- Inspect electrical cords
Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs, or have loose connections.
- Be careful when using candles
Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow out candles when you leave the room or go to sleep. NO Children at anytime lights or Extinguishes lite Candles, thats the PARENTS Job!
- Have a home fire escape plan
Make a home fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year. Know 2 ways out of EVERY room in your house.

About Us Print this page
On December 30,1957 the Sardis firefighters broke ground for their new fire station which was located on Route 80(now Rt.286) andWallace lane.On hand for the ceremonies were the line officers, association officers, township officals and the rest of the firefighters. The building was 32'x75' cement block building adequate to house 4 pieces of equipment and the use for local civic and social functions. Finally having a home to house the volunteers equipment was a great feeling to the men and women of the VFC.They housed the equipment at a service station down the road and held thier meetings at Sardis Elementary School prior to building the new fire station in 1957.The volunteers made a long 600 mile journey to Clintonville,Wis in September 1958 to bring home thier new pumper. It was a FWD S-500 with 750 gallons of water and a 500 gpm pump.Chief Donald Beecher along with President Eugene Schreiber and firefighters Herb Clements, Richard Grindle and Company mascot Big Dal (our first dalmation) were proud to bring the new pumper back to Sardis. After all the excitment of the new pumper wore off and back to answering alarms day in and day out,the volunteers would yet meet another milestone. They dedicated the new building on May,16 1959 with a strong membership of 41 volunteers and much help from community this was a exciting day for the men and women of the VFC.In November of 1965 the volunteers added a new social hall on to the fire station adding more room for fund raising events such as dinners and auctions just to name a few.In the spring of 1968 the VFC added another piece to the fleet a Ford F250 Brush truck,a much needed piece of equipment which we still have today and many consider the pride of our fleet. Through the 60's and 70's along with a tanker and a squad truck the volunteers would answer many calls and do alot of fundraising with the times changing and the fire calls becoming more numerous,it was time to expand. After a tragic fire at the station on October 27,1981 the volunteers picked themselves up and continued the proud tradition and added a new truck bay and a 33'x77' addition making our banquet facilities even larger. The Sunset Room would now be able to seat 400 people.Weddings,Bingo and Fish Frys are now the main fund raisers. On July 13,1985 yet another tragedy would strike the volunteers, our 1958 FWD was destroyed in an accident in Monroeville,Pa thus making way for our 1986 E-One "Hush" a state of the art pumper. Also in 1988 Sardis started providing Rescue Services due to many automobile and industrial accidents in our growing community. The 90's into the new millenium the fire calls and duties in the the fire service rapidly would grow.In 2003 the VFC would yet expand again adding a 78'x146' addition adding 2 more truck bays and a new dayroom with a kitchen and additional storage rooms. With the much needed space 3 more pieces of apparatus would expand our fleet to 7.Special Operations was the first bringing a new look to rescue work for the volunteers, with tons of training and lots of hard work Chief Bill Paiano and the rest of the VFC would meet the challenge and move foward in fire and rescue operations, next was the Collapse truck and the utility that works close with the Special Ops.Today,Calls have escalated into the hundreds and training hours have tripled but thats what makes us proud to say we are "The Proud Volunteers of Sardis Volunteer Fire Company" a great tradition since 1957.
